Microsoft Deprecation of SMTP Basic Authentication and Transition to OAuth Support
Upcoming Change: Microsoft Deprecation of SMTP Basic Authentication
Microsoft is retiring Basic Authentication for SMTP across Microsoft 365. Applications that rely on username/password SMTP connections will no longer be able to authenticate once Microsoft completes this deprecation.
To ensure uninterrupted operation of email‑based workflows, we are actively developing an update to the GlobalCapture SMTP capabilities that will support OAuth‑based authentication, the modern and Microsoft‑approved method for connecting to SMTP services.
What this means for your environment
Basic Auth SMTP connections will stop working as Microsoft completes its deprecation timeline.
An updated version of the SMTP‑enabled features with OAuth support is currently in development and will be released in early to mid-February ahead of Microsoft’s deprecation.
Customers will need to be on a current version of GlobalCapture to absorb this change.
Important note about bulk‑sending workflows
Microsoft’s Terms of Service place strict limits on how SMTP services—especially consumer or non‑commercial accounts—may be used. Many forms of bulk, automated, or high‑volume sending can be interpreted as misuse and may result in throttling or account restrictions by Microsoft.
We strongly encourage customers to:
Review any workflows that generate large volumes of outbound email
Confirm that their use of SMTP aligns with Microsoft’s acceptable‑use policies
Consider dedicated email delivery services for high‑volume or campaign‑style sending
Square 9 cloud customers may use Square 9’s built in and default SMTP configuration.
This ensures both compliance and long‑term reliability of your automated processes.
