Common Component Settings

Most components share the same settings. This page explains them once; each component's page covers only what is specific to it. Open a component's settings with the gear icon that appears when you hover over it in the form builder.

Not every component has every setting. Layout and display components such as Columns, Content or Image have only a few.

Display tab

Setting

What it does

Label

The text shown with the component. The property name on the API tab is created from the first label you enter.

Hide Label

Shows the label in the form builder but not on the form

Label Position

Puts the label above, beside or below the input

Placeholder

Hint text shown inside an empty field. It isn't saved.

Description

Help text shown below the field

Tooltip

Help text shown when users hover over an icon next to the label

Error Label

The name used for this field in error messages, if different from the label

Input Mask

A pattern the entry must follow: 9 is a digit, a is a letter, * is any character. For example, 999-99-9999.

Prefix / Suffix

Text shown before or after the input, such as $ or lbs. It isn't saved with the value.

Custom CSS Class

CSS class names for styling. See Using Custom CSS.

Tab Index

Changes the order in which the Tab key moves through fields

Multiple Values

Lets users enter more than one value, each in its own box

Clear Value When Hidden

On by default. When the component is hidden by a condition, its value is removed. See Show or Hide Components.

Enable Spell Check

Turns on the browser's spell checker for the field

Protected

The value is saved but never returned when submissions are read, including by administrators. Use it only for values no one needs to see again.

Persistent

On by default. Turn it off for values used only while filling in the form, such as a helper field for a calculation. The value is then not saved.

Hidden

The component is part of the form and its value is saved, but users don't see it. Useful for calculated values that are mapped to PDFs or other systems.

Initial Focus

Puts the cursor in this field when the form opens

Hide Input

Masks what the user types, like a password. This doesn't encrypt the value.

Disabled

Users can see but not change the value

Show Label in DataGrid

Inside a Data Grid, shows the label in each row as well as in the column header

Table View

Shows this field as a column in the list of submissions on the View Data tab

Data tab

Setting

What it does

Default Value

The value a new form starts with

Current User, Current Node, Current Date

Text-type fields only. Fill the field with the signed-in user's name, the GlobalCapture validation step, or today's date, without a script. The value updates each time the form is opened.

Input Format

How text is handled: Plain (recommended), HTML, or Raw (Insecure). Avoid Raw.

Custom Default Value, Calculated Value, Calculate on server

Scripts that set the value. See Rules and Scripting.

Validation tab

Setting

What it does

Required

The field must be filled in. Checked in the browser and again by the server.

Unique

No two submissions of this form can have the same value. The check ignores upper and lower case and is done by the server when the form is submitted.

Minimum Length / Maximum Length

Limits the number of characters. These are checked by the server when the form is submitted.

Regular Expression Pattern

The value must match this pattern

Custom Error Message

Replaces the standard error message for this field

Custom Validation, JSON Validation

Your own validation rules. See Custom Field Validation.

API tab

Setting

What it does

Property Name

The name the value is saved under. Scripts, PDF mapping, GlobalCapture field mapping and SQL actions use it. Must be unique on the form.

Field Tags

Labels you can use to organize components

Custom Properties

Extra name-value pairs stored with the component definition

Don't change a property name once a form has submissions. Existing submissions keep the value under the old name, so it no longer appears in the form, and mappings and scripts that use the old name stop working.

Layout tab

Sets the component's margins and width. The Overlay settings on this tab aren't used by GlobalForms; leave them empty.

Conditional tab

Shows, hides, requires, disables or masks the component based on other values. See Show or Hide Components and Making Components Required or Disabled.
